7 Common Mistakes Kids Make Learning to Tell Time

Seven errors account for almost everything that goes wrong when a child reads an analog clock, and each one has a specific fix. Work out which one you are looking at before you reteach anything, because the cure for a hand-swapping error does nothing for a child who cannot count by fives.
Each mistake below comes with what it sounds like, why it happens, and the exact question to ask when it shows up. All of them are normal between ages 5 and 9.
1. Swapping the two hands
The clock reads 5:10 and the child says "two twenty-five." They have read the long hand as the hour and the short hand as minutes, which is a reasonable guess when nobody has told you which is which.
Fix it by separating the hands rather than explaining them. Tape the minute hand flat for a few days and work with the hour hand alone, then reverse it. When both hands are back, ask the same two questions in the same order every time: "Which number did the short hand pass?" then "Where is the long hand pointing?" Never let the child answer the second question first.

2. Reading the minute hand as the number it points at
The minute hand is on the 3 and the child says "three minutes past." This is the single most common error after the hand swap, and it is a counting problem, not a clock problem.
Check the underlying skill first: can the child count 5, 10, 15, 20 all the way to 60 without slowing down? If not, stop clock work and drill skip counting for a week. It will save you a month.
Then label the dial. Write 5, 10, 15 and the rest beside each number in a second color and leave the labels in place for two weeks. When the child reads the number instead of the label, do not give the answer; point at the label and say, "Read the small red number." 3. Rounding the hour hand up to the nearest number
At 3:55 the hour hand is a hair short of the 4, so the child says "four fifty-five." The reverse shows up too: at 3:05 the hand looks like it is on the 3 and everything is fine, so the error only appears late in the hour and can go unnoticed for weeks.
The rule to repeat is short: "The hour is the last number the short hand went past." Have the child trace backward along the dial with a finger until they hit a number, then read it.
The drill that fixes it fastest is deliberately unfair. Set five clocks in a row at 1:50, 6:55, 11:58, 4:50, and 9:57 and ask only for the hour, not the full time. A child who gets four of five right has the concept; a child who gets one right is reading the nearest number every time.
4. Losing the hour in "quarter to"
The clock reads 4:45 and the child says "quarter to four." Quarter to is the only common time phrase that names an hour the clock has not reached yet, so children reach for the number they can see.
Ask, "Which hour is coming next? That is the one we say." Then have them read the same clock twice, "four forty-five" and "quarter to five," until the two labels attach to one picture. Reading it both ways is the part most people skip, and it is what makes the phrase usable.

5. Dropping the zero in single-digit minutes
The clock reads 3:05 and the child writes 3:5, or reads it aloud as "three five." Digital clocks show 3:05, so the written form has to be taught explicitly rather than assumed.
Teach both the writing and the saying. The minutes always take two digits, so five minutes past three is written 3:05 and said "three oh five." Give ten mixed times to write down, half of them under ten minutes past, and check the page rather than the answers said aloud.
A related mix-up lives at the top of the hour. At 12:55 the hour hand is nearly on the 1, and children write 1:55. Include a couple of these in every practice set once single minutes begin.
6. Ignoring AM and PM
A child who reads clocks perfectly can still write that dinner is at 8:00 AM. Analog practice never forces the question, so it has to be added on purpose.
Say the full time every time you read a clock aloud, AM or PM included, and anchor it to real events: breakfast at 7:00 AM, bedtime at 7:00 PM. Draw the day as one line, midnight to noon on the left and noon to midnight on the right, and have the child place five daily events on it.
Two facts have to be memorized rather than reasoned out: 12:00 AM is midnight and 12:00 PM is noon. Expect to reteach that pair several times. Sorting tasks such as matching daily routines to AM or PM put the labels into contexts the child already knows.
7. Treating elapsed time like column subtraction
Asked how long a movie ran from 2:50 to 4:15, a child stacks the numbers and subtracts, producing 2:35 or a borrow that turns into 1:65. Clocks run in base 60, and column subtraction assumes base 10.
Teach hopping to the next whole hour instead. From 2:50, hop 10 minutes to 3:00, then an hour to 4:00, then 15 minutes to 4:15. Add the hops: 10 plus 15 is 25 minutes, plus the whole hour, so 1 hour 25 minutes. Draw it as an open number line every single time until the child draws it without being asked.

How to work through them
Pick the one error your child makes most and work only on that for a week, five to ten minutes a day. Fixing one error cleanly beats a broad review that touches all seven and repairs none.
Check the sequence too, because several of these mistakes are really a sign that an earlier skill was never fluent. If a child cannot round the hour hand correctly, five-minute work is premature.
