What Is Elapsed Time? A Parent and Teacher Guide

Elapsed time is how much time passes between a start point and an end point. If a lesson begins at 9:15 and ends at 10:05, the elapsed time is 50 minutes. Children usually meet the idea formally in 2nd and 3rd grade, once they can already read a clock — and it is where a lot of confident clock-readers suddenly come unstuck.
What is elapsed time, and why it is harder than telling time
Telling time is a snapshot: you look at the clock and say what it reads. Elapsed time is a journey between two snapshots, and it asks a different question — "how long did that take?" That shift is the whole difficulty. A child who can read 3:10 and 3:45 perfectly may still have no idea that 35 minutes separates them.
The second complication is that time is not base ten. Minutes roll over at 60, not 100, so the arithmetic children have spent years practising quietly betrays them. This is why 2:45 to 4:15 so often comes back as "1 hour and 70 minutes."
Before starting, check the prerequisite honestly: can the child read any clock face to the minute without counting round from 12? If not, elapsed time will not stick, and time is better spent on building fluent analog clock reading first.
Teach it in this order
Each step below should be secure before the next one starts. Most children aged 7 to 10 need two or three short sessions per step rather than one long lesson.
- Whole hours. "2:00 to 4:00." Draw an empty number line and make one jump per hour. The number line matters more than the answer here — it is the tool everything later depends on.
- Half and quarter hours. "3:00 to 3:30." Keep the start time on the hour so only one quantity changes at a time.
- Crossing the hour. "9:15 to 10:45." Teach the two-jump habit: hop to the next whole hour first, then finish the minutes. From 9:15, jump 45 minutes to 10:00, then 45 more to 10:45, giving 1 hour 30 minutes.
- Counting back. Give the end time and the duration, ask for the start. Children who can only count forwards have learned a procedure, not the concept.
- Crossing noon. "11:45 to 1:30." Do this last. It combines elapsed time with AM/PM, and it is worth pausing on sorting activities for AM and PM if that boundary is still shaky.
Four strategies, and who each one suits

Teach one strategy properly before offering a second. Children given four methods at once tend to pick whichever they half-remember and apply it wrongly.
The four mistakes you will actually see
- Minutes above 60. "1 hour and 70 minutes." Fix it with a standing rule the child says aloud: if the minutes reach 60, trade them for an hour.
- Subtracting the digits. A child treats 4:15 − 2:45 like 415 − 245 and answers 1:70 or 2:30. This is the clearest sign the number line was skipped.
- Losing the AM/PM boundary. 11:45 AM to 1:30 PM is 1 hour 45 minutes, not 10 hours 15 minutes. Ask the child whether the answer is sensible before checking the arithmetic.
- Counting the start as one. From 3:00 to 6:00 the child counts "3, 4, 5, 6" and says four hours. Point at the gaps between the numbers, not the numbers.
When a child gets one wrong, resist correcting the answer. Ask "show me on the number line" instead — the error is nearly always visible in the jumps, and they will usually spot it themselves.
Practice that does not need worksheets
Elapsed time is unusual in that genuine practice is free and constant. Five that need no preparation:
- Baking. "In at 3:20, thirty-five minutes. When do we take them out?" (3:55)
- Car journeys. "We leave at 8:15 and it takes 2 hours 40. What time do we arrive?" (10:55)
- The school timetable. "Assembly ends at 9:45, maths runs to 10:30. How long is maths?" (45 minutes)
- Films. "It starts at 6:50 and ends at 8:25. How long was it?" (1 hour 35 minutes)
- Their own homework. Have the child record start and finish times, then work out the duration. Self-reported data is far more motivating than a worksheet.

A five-minute game: Time Detective
Works with one child or thirty, with no materials beyond paper.
- Call out a start time and a duration — "9:00, one hour fifteen."
- Everyone writes the end time.
- Reveal together. Anyone who is wrong explains their jumps rather than being told the answer.
- Every third round, reverse it: give the end time and the duration, ask for the start.
That reversal is the point of the game. It is the fastest way to find out who understands elapsed time and who has memorised a procedure. Adapting it for different learners
- Children who need concrete anchors. Tie every interval to something that actually happens in their day, using visual schedule clock routines so start and end times are pictures before they are numbers.
- English language learners. The arithmetic is rarely the barrier; the phrasing is. "How long", "until", "lasts", "from…to" all need teaching directly alongside the core English time vocabulary beginners need.
- Home educators. You have the advantage here: the whole day is available as material. Building the routine itself into the lesson works better than any exercise, and there are practical approaches to turning a daily schedule into time practice.
Knowing when it has stuck
One question settles it. Give a child the end time and the duration and ask for the start — "you finished at 4:20 after 50 minutes; when did you begin?" Forwards counting can be done by rote. Backwards cannot. If they can do it both ways, and they notice when an answer is absurd, elapsed time has landed.
